Even culture lovers, film fans, and theatre enthusiasts don’t want to stay indoors all summer long. Fortunately, there are still plenty of stages to be found without a roof.
Open-Air Theatre Elsrijk
In the park behind the Kruiskerk you will find the Open-Air Theatre Elsrijk, which has been there for more than 60 years. An intimate location, but much more than just a neighbourhood theatre. It is a stage where musical and theatrical talent can flourish and where both young and old are welcome. Take a seat on a chair or simply sit comfortably on the grass.
From May to September, performances take place here in the open air. From French chansons and cabaret to circus acts, big bands, theatre and pop music: there is something different to experience every time.

The Bostheater
Right in the middle of the Amsterdamse Bos there is a stage. Large enough for theatre classics, intimate enough for singer-songwriters with just a guitar. The Bostheater runs throughout the entire summer.
The highlight is the annual theatre production. This year: Spinoza, a musical about three siblings in 17th-century Amsterdam. Clashing dreams, forbidden love, and the courage to think differently. Unique this year is that every performance of Spinoza is accompanied by live subtitles.
At Live at Amsterdamse Bos, music sounds different. The trees soften the sound, the grass vibrates. From well-known names to up-and-coming artists.
For those who love discovering new talent, there is Bosfest. Ten days of emerging talent among the trees. Theatre, music, and a drink in the festival heart. The forest as a backdrop, and you can feel it. Sometimes you are listening to music by a stream, then watching theatre in an open field. It is always unique to see how new creators use the environment.

Free outdoor theatre
Besides Open-Air Theatre Elsrijk and the Bostheater, there are more places where music and theatre fill the open air.
Speelboerderij Elsenhove celebrates its 50th anniversary with interactive experiential theatre. The Kinderparade takes place in the city and recreates a miniature version of a theatre festival with live music, food trucks, and performances for the whole family. During the Japan Festival, the stage comes alive multiple times. And the regular jam session of Moanzy’s Showcase at the Boshalte is simply held outdoors in summer.
