Many renowned Dutch painters have painted the Amstel. Near the restaurant Klein Kalfje stands the Rieker windmill and a statue of Rembrandt. This was one of his favourite places to sketch. Other artists like Aert van der Neer and Piet Mondriaan could also be found sketching on the banks of the river.
