Workshop ‘Create your own freedom apron’

On May 5, Museum JAN, in collaboration with Amstelveen Oranje, hosts the workshop ‘Create your own freedom apron’. This creative activity focuses on freedom, connection, and sharing personal stories.

The workshop is inspired by the liberation skirt from 1945, a patchwork skirt symbolizing the celebration of freedom after World War II. Made from leftover fabrics, these skirts told personal stories and brought people together. Initiator Mies Boissevain-Van Lennep saw this as a way to celebrate freedom and create unity.

During the workshop, this tradition is continued in a contemporary way. In the JAN JUNIOR studio, participants will not make a skirt but their own freedom apron. While working with textiles, there is space to share stories and reflect on what freedom means today.

Everyone is welcome to join—young and old alike. Together, participants reflect on the value of freedom and the power of shared stories.
