The Turbulent 1980s: Photography by Wim Kuiper

In honor of Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary, the Music Meeting Lounge presents an exhibition of unique photographs by Wim Kuiper from the turbulent 1980s. Kuiper was not only a music lover – most of the collection at the Music Meeting Lounge is his legacy – but also a talented photographer.

Born in 1924 and a survivor of war and loss, Kuiper decided to seriously pursue his passion for photography after early retirement. He wandered for hours through his beloved city, along deserted streets and forgotten spaces, capturing Amsterdam in a striking way: raw, moving, and unpolished. From summer to winter, during squatter riots or on Coronation Day, he sought out people with character: real Amsterdammers, often on the fringes of society. He never left the house without his camera bag, always ready to capture that one special moment.
