One Topples, the Other Falls | Lily Lanfermeijer

The spinning top has been around as a toy for centuries. However, the shape, colour and material of the object have changed over time. An object transforms, just like the environment in which people live - that too is subject to change. One Topples, the Other Falls is a series of five spinning tops, each of which has features from a different era: one has a lead glaze finish which was often used in the Middle Ages, the other has a print that resembles coloured wallpaper from the '70s. Due to the enlargement of the spinning tops, the environment also seems to change in scale: are the sculptures monumental, or have the houses in the neighbourhood become dolls' houses?
